SASSA Grants Increased from 1 April 2026: New Amounts Confirmed

SASSA grants increased from 1 April 2026, and if you’re one of the 18 million South Africans depending on a monthly grant, this directly affects your pocket. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana approved it in the 2026 Budget Speech, and we have verified all the new amounts you will be receiving from 1 April 2026 through to 31 March 2027.

With the cost of living still pressing hard on everyday households, SASSA grant increases bring real relief to millions who depend on this support every month. This financial year, the gains are broader and better than last year, benefiting more grant types to aid every sector, from elderly pensioners and people with disabilities to children in foster and family care.

How Much Are SASSA Grants Increased From 1 April 2026

As part of the 2026 Budget Speech, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana approved new social grant amounts effective from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. Following this announcement, the National Treasury has confirmed that the increase will benefit every social grant this financial year, covering older persons, people with disabilities, war veterans, foster care, and child support recipients.

On average, the 2026 SASSA grant increases range from R20 on the smaller grants to R80 on the larger ones. This is a significant improvement over the October 2025 adjustment, which was only R10 across the board, making the increase from 2026 to 2027 considerably more substantial and covering more grant types than before.

How You Will Be Paid With Your Increased SASSA Grant

You do not need to submit a reapplication to receive the updated grant amounts. The increased grant will be paid automatically from 1 April 2026, provided your SASSA status is approved and you remain eligible.

The only thing that could delay or disrupt your payment is outdated or incorrect banking details on the SASSA system. So before the April payment is processed, confirm that your details are correct. You can change your banking details online at srd.sassa.gov.za.

If you do not have a bank account, your increased grant will still be accessible through SASSA’s retail payment partners. You can collect your payment at any approved retailer outlet, including Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Spar, and Boxer.

Your increased grant will be paid on the SASSA payment date for April 2026; nothing has changed in distribution. SASSA keeps a strict monthly schedule, so every beneficiary category follows an arranged payday and gets paid on time, every month, without disruption.

Government Budget Behind the 2026 Grant Increases

The South African government is spending R292.8 billion on social grants this financial year, and that is not small change. Total grant spending is set to grow from R246.6 billion to R276.5 billion by 2028/2029, unveiling a long-term commitment to keeping the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grants running.

Behind the increase, the National Treasury has quietly trimmed the overall allocation over the medium term. Lower inflation and tighter verification checks are the reasons given, with projected savings of R2 billion in 2026/2027 and R1 billion the year after. What that means in plain terms, new applicants are going to face stricter eligibility checks going forward.

Why the SRD R370 Grant Has Not Increased

For the nearly 8 million South Africans on the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, the amount stays at R370, unchanged since April 2024, and the 2026 Budget did not adjust it. What is confirmed is that the government has set aside R36.4 billion to keep SRD payments running through to 31 March 2027, so the grant remains secure for another year even without an increase.

On whether the SRD becomes permanent, no formal policy, timeline, or new value has been confirmed yet. President Ramaphosa has indicated that the government is working toward transitioning it into a long-term livelihood support grant for unemployed South Africans, but until that is officially announced, R370 remains the amount.

You can check your SRD status at sassacheck.com to confirm your application is approved and confirm your payment dates monthly for continued support.

SASSA Grant Increases Come With Stricter Regulations

The April 2026 increases come with a condition. National Treasury made it clear: more funding means stricter accountability. This accountability pushes SASSA to stricter compliance, run proper eligibility checks, and shut down fraudulent accounts draining the system.

Last December 2025, SASSA had reviewed around 6 million bank accounts and 8 million credit bureau records. From those checks, over 291,000 beneficiaries were flagged for review. More than 34,000 grants were cancelled outright, and another 8,500 had their amounts adjusted based on income findings. In one sweep, roughly R170 million was recovered.

If your identity is not verified, your income has changed, your banking details are outdated, or your personal information on the SASSA system is no longer accurate, your grant is at risk. It is your responsibility to keep your details up to date with SASSA and avoid the risk of having your grant declined.
