The SASSA online application process is simple, but each grant has specific eligibility criteria. Applicants must meet the basic requirements before their application can be processed:
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognised refugee.
- Reside within South Africa (apply to the recipient child and caregiver).
- Meet the age requirement for the grant type.
- 60 years and older for the Old Age Grant, or under 18 years for the Child Support Grant.
- Not receive another social grant and additional NSFAS, SARS, or UIF payments.
- Being unemployed or having no means for the specific SASSA R370 grant type.
- Together with a spouse, comply with the means test income threshold (where applicable).

If your circumstances meet these eligibility criteria, you qualify for SASSA support. Your application will get processed, and the result will be updated on the SASSA status checker.
How SASSA Pays Approved Grants
Approved grants are paid according to the SASSA payment schedule for the monthly financial support.
SASSA payments are made directly into beneficiaries’ own bank accounts and are also available for cardholders to access at Postbank ATMs or authorised retailers, including Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Spar, and Boxer, depending on the chosen payment method.
Important: SASSA will only pay approved grants into the beneficiary’s own bank account, not anyone else’s. To avoid delays, always ensure your SASSA banking details are updated on the SASSA portal at srd.sassa.gov.za.
