SASSA Payment Methods 2025 for Grant Beneficiaries

SASSA payment methods are the official ways in which grant funds are disbursed to eligible beneficiaries in South Africa. Whether you receive the SRD R350 grant, an old age pension, disability grant, or child support grant, SASSA offers multiple payment options for both social grant holders and Social Relief of Distress (SRD) beneficiaries.

  • Direct Bank Deposits
  • Postbank issued SASSA Cards
  • South African Post Office (SAPO)
  • Selected Retail Outlets (Shoprite, Pick n Pay, USave, Spar, Boxer, and Checkers)

SASSA Payment Methods 2025

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides several secure payment channels for beneficiaries of the Old Age Grant, Disability Grant, Child Support Grant, and the SRD R370 Grant. These payment methods allow approved recipients to withdraw their funds safely each month.

SASSA’s grant payment options are designed to serve the diverse needs of beneficiaries across the country. Whether you live in a rural village or a busy city, you can choose the payment method that’s closest and most convenient for you to access your approved grant on time.

Direct Bank Deposit to Beneficiary Bank Account

If you have a personal bank account, you can choose to receive your SASSA R350 grant or social grant directly into it. SASSA recommends this method for beneficiaries with bank accounts and provides an online process to “change banking details” to receive approved grant payments without delays. It is considered one of the safest and most reliable SASSA payment options.

Grant payments are made into accounts with major banks such as TymeBank, Standard Bank, FNB, ABSA, Postbank, Investec, Capitec Bank and others. Always ensure that your banking details are accurate and match your national ID document to avoid any payment issues.

Note: SASSA does not force beneficiaries to use any specific bank.

SASSA Card Payments: From Gold Card to the New Black Card

The familiar Gold Card has been replaced by the new Postbank Black Card in 2025. The updated SASSA card is suitable for beneficiaries who don’t use a personal bank account. This new Black Card allows grant recipients to receive their payments at major retail stores like Checkers, Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer, Spar, and Usave.

Both the old Gold Card and the new Postbank Black Card work within South Africa’s National Payment System. Beneficiaries can use these SASSA cards to withdraw funds at ATMs, point-of-sale (POS) machines, Postbank branches, Post Office counters, or partner stores, all without extra charges when using supported outlets.

Important Card Replacement Sites

Postbank has officially replaced all Gold Cards with the new Black Cards for future grant payments and transactions. You can visit any Postbank site located at an authorised SASSA retail partner, such as Pick n Pay, Boxer, Usave, Spar, Shoprite, or Checkers, to collect your new Black Card.

SASSA card replacement sites are available across all nine provinces of South Africa, including KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State, Northern Cape, North West, Western Cape, and Eastern Cape.

South African Post Office (SAPO)

Millions of SASSA grant holders have relied on the Post Office’s wide network to collect their monthly grants. Recently, the South African Post Office (SAPO) announced it will no longer handle SASSA grant payments. In this situation, SASSA has urged beneficiaries to use alternative options like banks or retail stores.

Update: SAPO is now officially stepping back, with Postbank taking over the responsibility for social grant payments nationwide.

SASSA Partnered Retail Stores and Supermarkets

SASSA has partnered with several major retail stores to make it easier for beneficiaries to collect their monthly grant payments from nearby locations, which reduces the long queues at Post Offices. These selected retail stores and supermarkets include:

Pick n Pay

With extensive presence nationwide, Pick n Pay stores help beneficiaries collect grant money.

Shoprite

Beneficiaries can access their SASSA payments from Shoprite pay points across South Africa.

Usave

Usave outlets provide a convenient location for SASSA grant withdrawals.

Boxer

Local Boxer stores are authorised to handle SASSA payment collections and withdrawals.

Spar

Spar stores across South Africa are authorised to assist with SASSA card payments.

Checkers

Checkers branches support SASSA grant access and allow direct cash withdrawals.

Important Reminder for SASSA Recipients

Once your SASSA status check is approved, your monthly social grant or SRD payment will be processed through the payment method you selected.

It’s important to keep your SASSA-registered phone number active. This ensures you receive all payment notifications and reduces the risk of delayed payments.

Always check the official SASSA payment schedule to confirm the exact dates for your grant payout. Staying informed allows you to plan and avoid unnecessary disruptions.

Update: SASSA Discontinues Cash Send

SASSA has officially discontinued the Cash Send payment method. Beneficiaries can no longer receive their grant payments via money transfer services or collect funds at designated pick-up points. This change is permanent and applies to all social grant types, including the SRD grant.
