Change Banking Details SASSA

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) distribute various Social Grants and the Social Relief of Distress (SRD), to help underprivileged citizens, permanent residents, and refugees.

To change your SASSA banking details, visit srd.sassa.gov.za and submit your correct bank account information. This is important if your application status is “Pending Banking Details” or if you’ve switched to a new bank. You can change banking details SASSA online. Your preferred payment method can be set to a personal bank account or a SASSA card.

Why Keeping Your SASSA Banking Details Updated Matters

One of the most common reasons for not receiving your grant payouts is incorrect, unverified, or missing banking details. Keeping your SASSA account updated with accurate SRD banking information is essential for receiving your payments on time. Whether you’re approved for the SASSA R370 grant or already receiving a social grant, submitting the correct bank account details helps prevent SASSA payment issues.

  • Your bank account must be active and registered in your own name (must match your South African ID).
  • It will need your bank details, identity document, full name, and the cellphone number used in your SASSA grant application.
  • A valid South African identity document includes a National ID card, or a Refugee or Asylum Seeker permit.
  • You can use any South African bank without condition, including Capitec, FNB, ABSA, Nedbank, Postbank, or TymeBank.

Important for SASSA Beneficiaries with Personal Bank Accounts

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) have no restrictions on which bank beneficiaries may use to receive their grant payments. All beneficiaries have the full right to choose any registered bank in South Africa to receive their SASSA grant deposits.

You can use any recognised financial institution, including Capitec Bank, FNB, TymeBank, Nedbank, ABSA, Standard Bank, African Bank, Investec, Postbank, or any other authorised bank in South Africa. The only requirement is that the bank account must be registered in your name and linked to your valid ID document.

Note: Your mobile number must be registered in your name to ensure you receive all SMS confirmations and SASSA payment notifications. If you’ve lost access to your SRD number, complete the SASSA phone number change process before updating your banking details.

SASSA Bank Details Processing Time

After submitting your updated bank details, SASSA initiates a verification process, which may take up to 10 working days. Once verified, your SRD R350 (now R370) or other social grant payments will be deposited into your new bank account or SASSA card, depending on the payment method you selected.

You’ll receive a confirmation SMS on your registered mobile number once SASSA approves your bank details. You can also track the update using the official SASSA SRD status checker with your ID number and mobile phone.

From now on, all future grant payments will be paid directly into your bank account or available for withdrawal via your SASSA card at Postbank ATMs, participating retail stores, or Post Offices. You can withdraw your grant at major retail stores including Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Spar, Boxer, and Usave nationwide.

Note: To stay updated on your grant payout dates, regularly check SASSA payment dates schedule. This helps ensure you receive your grant money on time and avoid payment delays.

SASSA Verification and Validation Process

SASSA’s security and fraud prevention system only pays grants into bank accounts that match the approved applicant’s name and ID number. This helps prevent fraud and ensures payments reach the rightful beneficiary. When you add or change your bank details, SASSA runs a full verification and validation process:

  • Identity Verification: Your ID number, name, and surname are checked against the Department of Home Affairs to confirm your identity.
  • Cross-Referencing: Your information is matched with government databases, including NSFAS, UIF, and SARS, to confirm your eligibility.
  • Fraud Risk Prevention: SASSA screens your details using the means test and fraud prevention database to detect duplicate or suspicious claims.

Based on these SASSA checks, your banking details will get approved or declined, with a reason provided. If approved, your grant is paid only to the verified bank account or SASSA card registered in your name.
