As a government-operated agency, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) requires all grant beneficiaries to meet specific eligibility rules. You may not apply for government jobs (as a public servant) or receive other benefits such as UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) or NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) while receiving a SASSA grant.
Cancel SASSA Grant Application Online
If you’ve found new employment or been accepted into the NSFAS study programme, you must cancel your SASSA grant, as continued receipt may affect your eligibility for work or education opportunities.
SASSA’s online portal only allows SRD Grant cancellations. All other social grant cancellation requests are processed through the SASSA office following the specific procedure.
- To cancel your grant application, visit the SASSA portal. https://srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/cancellation
- Scroll down to the “Cancel My SASSA Grant Application” tab.
- Then click the yellow button labelled “Click Here for SASSA Cancel Application Online”.
- A new prompt will appear asking for your details.
- Enter your South African ID number and the cellphone number registered with your SASSA application.
- Click “Send PIN” to receive a SASSA verification OTP (One Time PIN) via SMS.
- Enter the SASSA OTP to verify your identity as the original applicant.
- Click the “Cancel My Grant” button. A message will appear asking: “Are you sure to cancel your grant application?”
- Confirm your request by selecting the “Yes” option to proceed with your grant cancellation.
- Select the reason for the cancellation, such as a job or other grant.
- Upload your job appointment letter/payslip (if needed).
- Submit your request and wait for the confirmation SMS on your phone.
Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation SMS on your registered number from SASSA stating: “Your request to cancel your SASSA grant has been sent.”
What Happens After Cancelling Your SASSA Grant
SASSA typically processes your grant cancellation request within 3 to 14 business days. Once confirmed, SASSA will stop all future payments for your grant. Then, your details will be removed from the system, clearing your record from the SASSA database. Your ID and name will no longer show in the list of active beneficiaries.
Cancel Your SASSA Social Grants
The process to cancel your permanent social grants, including an Old Age Grant, Disability Grant, or Child Support Grant, requires a visit to a SASSA office. This is how it is done at the office.
- Visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID card.
- Request the SASSA representative for your grant cancellation.
- Provide your reason for cancellation, such as a job, study, or business.
- Submit your fingerprints for identity verification to complete the process.
- You will receive a receipt confirming that your grant has been cancelled.
After that, your payments will stop, and you will no longer be a SASSA beneficiary, which means no SASSA grant will be registered under your ID anymore.
