How Much Does SASSA Pay to Foster Parents
As of February 2026, the SASSA Foster Child Grant payment amount is R1,250 per month per child. This amount increases annually when the South African National Treasury announces new social grant adjustments during the national budget update.
What Is the Foster Care Grant Age Limit
SASSA pays the Foster Child Grant until the child turns 18 years old. After that, the SASSA payment stops unless a children’s court issues an extended foster care order. This extension is usually granted when the young adult still needs to continue school (education). You must submit your updated court order to SASSA for your Foster Care Grant payments to continue.
When SASSA Review Your Foster Child Grant
SASSA reviews the Foster Child Grant every two years. During this review, you must provide a life certificate, updated details about the child’s current circumstances, and an extended court order confirming the foster placement. SASSA will notify you at least three months before the review to submit all required documents to continue your grant.
When SASSA Lapses Your Foster Child Grant
Your Foster Child Grant will lapse when your legal foster care rights end.
- The court order expires.
- The child turns 18, unless the court extends the foster care order.
- The foster child passes away.
- You fail to collect the grant for three consecutive months.
- You or the child leaves South Africa permanently.
- The child is placed in a state institution.
