SASSA OTP Code (One Time Pin)

The SASSA OTP (One-Time Pin) code is sent to your mobile phone as part of the verification process when accessing certain SASSA services online or making changes to your account. This OTP is valid for less than 15 minutes and is used to confirm your identity. In the following scenarios, you can expect SASSA to send you an OTP code via SMS.

  • Registration or Login: When you register or log in to the SASSA online portal, you will receive an OTP to verify your identity as a new applicant or existing beneficiary.
  • Updating Personal Details: If you update your application for personal information, such as changing your phone number or banking details, SASSA sends an OTP to confirm the changes.
  • Application or Reapplication: When you submit a SASSA R350 application or a social grant application, an OTP is sent to verify your identity.
  • Password Reset: If you request a password reset for your SASSA account, an OTP will be sent to your registered phone to ensure the request is legitimate.

SASSA OTP Code

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) sends an OTP message to the beneficiary’s registered phone number in the following situations.

  1. To obtain your SASSA OTP code, you need to register or log in to the SASSA online portal. https://services.sassa.gov.za/
  2. Make any updates to your current information related to your SASSA grant application.
  3. Changing your banking details or registered phone number requires an OTP to protect your information.
  4. Submitting a new SASSA R350 application or a reapplication requires OTP confirmation to keep your details secure.
  5. Lodging an appeal request requires OTP verification to confirm your identity and protect your account.
  6. SASSA will also send an OTP to verify your identity if you request to reset your SASSA account password, helping you regain access smoothly.

Duration of SASSA OTP

Once you receive your SASSA OTP on your registered phone number, it will be active for less than 15 minutes, giving you plenty of time to use it. If it expires, don’t worry; you can quickly request a new code. Entering the OTP carefully helps everything go through smoothly, and it prevents a 24-hour temporary lock on your account.

Note: You can request to unblock your SASSA card if it is declined during transactions.

What to do if the SASSA OTP is not received

If your SASSA verification OTP has not arrived, try these helpful steps.

  • Make sure the mobile phone number you registered with SASSA is the one receiving the OTP.
  • Weak signals are a common reason for delayed OTP messages, so check your mobile network and wait for a stable connection.
  • SASSA recommends waiting at least 5 minutes before requesting a new OTP to avoid token conflicts.
  • Waiting before requesting another OTP helps the system respond properly and prevents ‘invalid token’ errors.
  • If the problem continues, you can use the SASSA WhatsApp line or call the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 11 for support.

SASSA applicants and beneficiaries can request an OTP code for confirmation by dialling the SASSA helpline number at 0800 60 10 11. If you need to communicate directly, you can also email SASSA at grantsenquiries@sassa.gov.za.

SASSA OTP is a security measure designed to protect your personal information and ensure that only the original applicant can access SASSA grant payments and modify account information for the SASSA online application. Always keep your phone number updated with SASSA to avoid any issues with receiving your OTP and grant updates.

Important: For your new application, you will receive a unique SASSA reference number to track your application progress.

Important Reminder for Beneficiaries

Your cellphone number is the primary source for receiving SASSA verification OTPs. If you lose your registered phone number, you have the option to change phone number linked to your SASSA grant application online and continue receiving important messages.

Update 2025: In addition to OTP verification, SASSA has introduced biometric ID verification to strengthen grant security. Beneficiaries are required to visit their nearest SASSA office to complete the identity verification.
