SASSA Card Renewal

To renew your SASSA card, you have to visit a Post Office branch or a Postbank card replacement site. SASSA card renewal is only processed through a physical visit; there is no online process available. We assist you throughout the complete process to replace your outdated card at the office.

SASSA Card Renewal Process

You only need your South African ID to complete your SASSA card renewal. Simply follow these steps, and you will understand the process of renewing your outdated SASSA card at any card replacement site in your region.

  1. Dial *120*355# on your cellphone to locate your nearest card replacement site instantly.
  2. Visit your chosen Postbank card-issuing facility close to your location.
  3. Ask the working staff for your new SASSA card.
  4. You have to provide the reason for renewal and submit the old card (if available).
  5. Present your South African ID for quick verification.
  6. In a few minutes, you will receive your new Postbank Black Card completely free of charge.
  7. Activate your new card by setting a PIN at a nearby Postbank ATM to make it ready to use immediately.

Now your new card works perfectly for withdrawing grants and making everyday purchases, just like a debit card.

Update: Each year, the SASSA Outreach Program brings support directly to rural communities across all provinces, assisting with SASSA applications and grant information.

Activate Your New SASSA Card

Before using your new SASSA card, you have to activate it through an ATM, allowing you to receive your grant and transfer or withdraw your funds without any delay.

  1. You can visit any Post Office (SAPO) or Postbank ATM close to you.
  2. Insert your new SASSA card and enter the temporary PIN that was issued to you.
  3. Follow the on-screen steps to create your own secure PIN for the SASSA card.
  4. Once your PIN is set, your card is fully active and ready to use.

You can now use your activated SASSA card at Postbank ATMs and participating retailers nationwide to withdraw your grant.

Important Reminder for Card Holders

  • If your SASSA card lost or stolen, you are eligible for one free replacement per year at authorised card replacement sites.
  • Through the change-banking-details option on the SASSA online portal, you can switch from the SASSA card to direct bank payments for your grant.

Official Statements

Nikki Mbengashe, CEO of Postbank, reassures beneficiaries that existing Gold Cards remain valid during the transition. Once all beneficiaries have moved to the Postbank Black Card, the old Gold Cards will be gradually phased out.

Themba Matlou, Acting CEO of SASSA, warmly encourages:

“We urge all beneficiaries to collect their new Black Cards from the nearest card replacement site. This simple step ensures your SASSA grant payments continue without interruption.”
