How Much Must You Earn to Qualify for SASSA Grant

SASSA grants eligibility is determined based on financial criteria. This applies to both permanent social grant recipients and SRD grant beneficiaries. To qualify for SASSA funding, your earnings must be lower than a certain threshold.

How Much Must You Earn to Qualify for SASSA Grant

SASSA offers several social grant programmes, each with specific earning limits for applicants and existing beneficiaries. These include the Child Support Grant, Disability Grant, Older Persons Grant, and the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant.

You can qualify for a SASSA grant if you meet the eligibility requirements based on the salary you earn. We’ve listed all the threshold requirements for SASSA grants to assist you in determining your qualification for SASSA financial assistance.

Older Person Grant

For single recipients of the Old Age Grant (also known as Older Person Grant), the maximum annual income allowed is R96,840 (R8,070 per month).

If you are married, there’s a combined earnings test for spouses’ eligibility. Your annual earnings should stay below R193,680 (monthly R16,140).

Disability Grant

Applicants for the SASSA Disability Grant with a disability should not earn more than R249,600 per annum (R20,800 per month).

For married beneficiaries, the combined annual income should not exceed R499,200 (R41,600 per month).

Child Support Grant

For a single caregiver and legal guardian, the maximum annual earnings to qualify for the SASSA Child Support Grant are R60,000 (R5,000 per month).

For a married beneficiary, the combined income of both spouses should not exceed R120,000 per year (R10,000 per month).

Foster Child Grant

All Foster Child Grant recipients are not required to undergo an income assessment. SASSA provides this grant to caregivers who have been appointed by a South African court to care for orphaned foster children.

War Veterans Grant

For a single recipient of the War Veterans Grant, the maximum annual earnings allowed is R96,840 (monthly R8,070).

Married applicants have a combined maximum annual earning threshold of R193,680. To remain eligible for the SASSA War Veterans Grant, your monthly income should not exceed R16,140.

Care Dependency Grant

Parents can apply for the Care Dependency Grant for children over 18 if their annual earnings are less than R249,600 (R20,800 per month).

The combined earnings of both parents or legal guardians should not exceed R499,200 annually (R41,600 per month).

Important: Your bank balance is assessed monthly, and if it exceeds this limit, your grant will be declined. Here is how to fix your SASSA declined grant online.

Social Relief of Distress SRD Grant

To be eligible for the SASSA R370 grant (previously R350), your maximum monthly earnings should not exceed R624.

The SRD R350 grant has been increased to R370, providing financial assistance to all South African citizens, refugees, and asylum seekers with a valid temporary ID card or green book.

Why Your Earnings Matter for SASSA Grant Eligibility

To qualify for a SASSA grant, your annual and monthly earnings must fall within the limits set by the SASSA Means Test. Each grant type has its threshold, and this applies whether you are single or married.

It’s important to review the required limits before starting your SASSA application and maintain monthly as required to continue to receive your approved grant.

SASSA checks your funds in your bank account. If your monthly and annual earnings exceed the allowed threshold, your application will be declined.

Important Reminder: Always ensure your SASSA bank balance remains below the established limits of your specific grant you’re applying for, whether it’s the Older Persons, Disability, Child Support, or SRD R370 grant.
