SASSA Card Renewal 2025 Updated
SASSA card renewals for 2025 are now being handled at established Postbank card issuing sites and approved SASSA partners across all provinces in South Africa. Whether your SASSA gold card has expired, been damaged, or lost, all beneficiaries are now required to collect the newly introduced Postbank black card to avoid payment disruptions.
It’s important to note that the card renewal process is not available online. To renew your SASSA card and continue receiving your grant without delays, you must visit a nearby Postbank site in person.
SASSA Card Renewal 2025
With the introduction of the Postbank black card, SASSA has officially confirmed that gold cards are being outdated and can no longer be renewed. Any expired or lost SASSA card will now be replaced with a black card.
The black card is the new standard for all SASSA grant beneficiaries, whether you receive the Older Persons Grant, Child Support Grant, Disability Grant, or the SRD R370 Grant.
To remain eligible for your monthly SASSA grant payout, you must transition to the Postbank black card system. However, if you’ve change banking details for SASSA payment and switched to another bank, this step doesn’t apply; your grant will be paid directly into your new account.
Where to Get the New Black Card for SASSA Grant Payment
You can collect your black card from your nearest Postbank card replacement site or any participating SASSA retailers, including Shoprite, Boxer, Usave, Spar, Pick n Pay, and Checkers.
You must bring your South African ID and, if available, your expired gold card. Once your biometric identity is verified, your black card will be issued on the spot; no waiting period applies.
Check Postbank Card Replacement Sites
In all nine provinces of South Africa, that is Gauteng, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, North West, and Western Cape, Postbank has made it easier for beneficiaries to find nearby card replacement points.
To locate your nearest Postbank site for card collection:
- Dial *120*218*3# on your cellphone.
- Reply with 1.
- Choose the number matching your province.
- You’ll receive an SMS showing your nearest card replacement site.
How to Get the New SASSA Card (Postbank Black Card)
SASSA urges all beneficiaries not to wait until the last minute. If your gold card expires in 2025 and you need renewal, head to the nearest Postbank site to complete the switch to the black card and avoid payment delays.
- Go to the nearest South African Postbank site.
- Bring your original South African ID document or a temporary ID if you are an asylum seeker or resident.
- Your expired SASSA card (if not lost or damaged)
- Complete your biometric identity verification.
- Once your identity is confirmed, you’ll be issued the new black card immediately.
New SASSA Card Activation Process
Activating your new SASSA card at ATM is a compulsory step to start receiving your grant payments without a problem.
- Insert your new SASSA card into a Post Office (SAPO), Postbank ATM, or any retailer ATM.
- Enter the temporary PIN issued by Postbank.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the activation.
- Create a new PIN you’ll remember and confirm it.
- Once activated, your card can be used to withdraw your SASSA grant payments.
What’s New About the Black Card?
The new black SASSA card works across all major payment platforms in South Africa. It can be used at Post Office and Postbank ATMs, retailers’ point-of-sale machines, and any store that accepts bank cards.
You’ll receive the same benefits with the new black card as you did with the gold card, including one free card replacement per year, three free in-store withdrawals per month, and one free monthly statement at the counter. The black card also features improved security to better protect your grant funds and personal details.
Most importantly, the new SASSA card is free to collect, and no renewal fees apply. Postbank and SASSA have expanded the replacement rollout nationwide, including mobile units in rural and high-demand areas.
Update 2025: Nikki Mbengashe, CEO of Postbank, confirmed that although SASSA gold cards will remain valid during the transition period, they will be fully phased out once every beneficiary has collected the new black card.
Mr Themba Matlou, Acting CEO of SASSA, added:
“Beneficiaries must get their Postbank black cards now at their nearest card replacement site, as that will guarantee they continue receiving their payments.”
