SASSA Card Renewal 2024

You can process SASSA card renewal even though the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has extended the validity of expired SASSA cards. According to Postbank spokesperson Dr Bongani Diako, expired SASSA Gold Cards valid for social grant beneficiaries, allowing them to receive grant payments beyond 2024. You can withdraw funds and make transactions without needing to replace your old card this year, and it will remain valid throughout 2025.

SASSA Card Renewal Process

To renew your SASSA card, you must visit a Post Bank branch in person. The South African Post Bank is authorized to manage and issue new SASSA Gold Cards, replace lost SASSA cards, and renew expired cards. Follow this process steps to apply for SASSA card renewal.

  1. Visit your nearest South African Post Bank branch.
  2. Bring the required documents for renewing your expired SASSA card.
    • Your expired SASSA card
    • Your original South African ID document
    • Proof of your current address (a recent utility bill)
  3. Inform the Post Bank helpdesk that you are there to renew your expired SASSA card.
  4. Complete the SASSA card renewal form and submit your documents.
  5. You will receive a receipt, which you will use to collect your new SASSA card.
  6. Wait for a confirmation message on your registered SASSA phone number indicating that your renewed card is ready for collection.
  7. Go to the Post Bank branch or Post Office (SAPO) specified in the message to collect your new SASSA card.

After receiving your new card, be sure to activate it to avoid your SASSA card declined at ATM. You should follow the instructions provided on the back of the card. Set your new card PIN for ATM withdrawals and online transactions, and keep your information confidential.

With your renewed card, you can receive your grant money through ATM, money transactions from your SASSA card to your bank account, cash payments at retail stores, and at the Post Office (SAPO). If needed, you can update your payment method by changing your banking details SASSA.

  • Important Update: Nearly 48% of recipients receive their monthly payments through cash payments at various retailers, Post Office branches, and ATMs using their SASSA cards. The majority, around 62% of SASSA social grant beneficiaries, have switched SASSA payment methods to bank payments. This is a convenient way to prevent SASSA payment delays and continue receiving your grant without disruption.

  5. I visited the post office in Kroonstad this morning to renew my mother’s old age sassa card. The official told me that it is not yet neccessary to renew the card since there is a extension again. He did not want to issue a new card.
