SASSA Appeal

To submit your SASSA appeal for a declined grant, you must have your ID card and the cell phone number used during your SASSA application. It is your legal right to appeal against the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) decision to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) within 30 days, but not later than 90 days from the date of rejection. The ITSAA, which operates under the Department of Social Development (DSD), will review your appeal application. If approved, your declined SRD grant or social grant will be reinstated for monthly payments.

SASSA Appeal Application

Before submitting a SASSA SRD appeal, check your SASSA application status to confirm the reason for decline or rejection. If you believe the reason provided by SASSA was incorrect and you meet the grant qualification requirements, you can request reconsideration by lodging an appeal. To proceed, ensure you meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Applied for the SASSA SRD R370 grant.
• Your application was declined within the past 90 days.
• Unemployed or earn less than R624 per month.
• Not receiving any other government grant (such as NSFAS, SARS, or UIF).
• Have a valid South African ID and cellphone number used in your original application.
• Disagree with the reason SASSA gave for the rejection.

Note: Have your application details, the decline reason, and a clear explanation ready before submitting your appeal.

1. To submit your SASSA appeal, visit the official appeal portal. https://srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals
2. Select the service ‘Lodge an Appeal’ for a specific grant application.
3. Enter your ID number and the phone number used during the application process.
4. Click “Send Pin” to request a SASSA OTP code.
5. Enter the OTP you received in the provided field and verify your identity.
6. Choose the month you want to appeal for a declined grant or rejected application.
7. Provide the appropriate reason for appealing.
8. Submit your complete appeal application and wait for the outcome.

Note: SASSA will send you a confirmation message to inform you that your appeal application has been successfully submitted.

Processing Time for SASSA SRD Appeal Outcome

You can expect your appeal outcome within 60 to 90 working days. During that time, the ITSAA will review your application, verifying your personal details and circumstances to ensure you have met the SASSA SRD R350 (now R370 grant) or social grant eligibility criteria.

Once the ITSAA approve your appeal application, the previous SASSA decision will be overturned, and your grant application will be reinstated for monthly payments. This online appeal process is effective and has already helped thousands of applicants across South Africa over the past year.

SASSA Appeal Status Check

Update: Once your appeal is approved, you can expect to receive your monthly grant. SASSA payment will be backdated from the date your appeal application was submitted.
